Denmark to introduce new EU entry and exit tracking system

Starting October 12, Denmark will roll out an EU-wide IT system that will monitor the entry and exit of third-country nationals visiting Denmark for short stays of up to 90 days in an effort to tighten Schengen area border security.

As part of the new Entry/Exit System, non-EU and non-Nordic nationals arriving in and departing from Schengen countries will have their passports scanned, fingerprints recorded, and facial photos taken. The tracking system will apply to travellers from both visa-exempt and visa-required third countries; however, third-country internationals who already reside in Denmark will be exempt.

Denmark’s Immigration and Integration Minister, Rasmus Stoklund, believes the system will help authorities identify people attempting to enter using false documents or overstaying their permitted time, as well as assist in the prevention, detection, and investigation of terrorism and other serious crimes.

Acknowledging the scale of the rollout and potential teething problems, Stoklund advised travellers to allow extra time at airports, particularly during the autumn holiday period. „Although EES only applies to third-country nationals, the increased checks may affect waiting times for travellers. That’s why it’s a good idea to arrive early at the airport, especially if travelling outside Schengen,” he said.

The system will be introduced across 29 European countries over the next six months, with full implementation expected by April 9, 2026. In Denmark, it will be introduced gradually at Copenhagen Airport to limit disruption, but will be fully operational at other Danish border crossing points from October 12.
