CALCATA: a charming medieval village, steeped in history and legend
Perched on a tuff spur that seems to defy the laws of gravity, CALCATA rises in the heart of the Treja Valley, in the province of Viterbo, like a petrified temple. It is no mere urban agglomeration, but a living organism that breathes through the cracks in the volcanic rock. A place where time does not flow linearly, but is stratified, superimposing the Etruscan era, the dark Middle Ages, and the bohemian utopia of recent decades.
To understand the soul of this Lazio town, we must delve into its geologically turbulent roots. Born from the massive eruptions of the Sabatino volcanic system, the relief of CALCATA is the result of millennia of erosion caused by the incessant flow of the Treja River. The first to inhabit these fissures were the Faliscans, a people related to the Etruscans, who considered this plateau an impregnable stronghold and a sacred precinct. The necropolises scattered throughout the dense surrounding woods still preserve the mystery of a civilization symbiotically fused with wild nature.
Between Shadows and Relics: The Untold Mysteries

While official historiography focuses on the village’s defensive architecture, much darker stories linger among the narrow alleys, like underground tunnels, only whispered within the stone walls. Few know that the real CALCATA lies beneath the visible CALCATA. A network of underground passages, cellars, and secret passages pierces the rocky outcrop. During the passage of the Landsknecht troops in 1527, these chthonic spaces served not only as refuge, but also as venues for deconsecrated meetings. It is said that some of the bare tuff walls are engraved with symbols, never deciphered, dating back to a local Gnostic heresy suppressed before it could spread to nearby Rome.
The Enigma of the Lost Relic
For centuries, the village church housed the controversial relic of the Holy Foreskin, supposedly left in 1527 by a captured Landsknecht soldier. However, the real enigma lies not in the relic’s authenticity, but in its mysterious disappearance in 1983. Local legends hold that it was no ordinary theft, but the intervention of a secret brotherhood intent on protecting an amulet believed to be capable of altering the very magnetism of the rock on which the village rests.

Historic inhabitants often speak of the „breathing of the hill.” On clear nights of subterranean wind, the tradition generates a low-frequency hissing sound among the tuff cavities and the humidity of the underlying vegetation. Popular tradition attributed this resonance to the „Witches of the Valley,” shamanic figures who, until the early twentieth century, practiced vegetation rites to encourage crops along the riverbanks. In the 1930s, Calcata was condemned to death by government decree: the rock, deemed unstable, had to be abandoned. The original inhabitants moved nearby, founding CALCATA NUOVA. The ancient village, however, refused to crumble. Beginning in the 1960s, sculptors, painters, musicians, and artisans from all over the world began to squat in the abandoned houses, restoring them by hand. This cultural contamination has transformed the town into an open-air laboratory, where the old stables have been converted into art galleries and the carved wooden doors tell stories of community utopias.

Strolling through the streets of this spur today is like immersing yourself in a suspended dimension. Stone chairs carved into the terraces offer breathtaking views of the lush vegetation of the Treja Valley Regional Park, creating an almost dizzying sense of space. Unlike traditional historic centers housed in museums, CALCATA preserves an unpredictable volcanic nature. Every half-open door reveals workshops where stone, leather, and iron are shaped using techniques that blend ancient knowledge with modern avant-garde.
Beneath the apparent tranquility of its small squares, CALCATA holds an ancestral energy: a place where stone meets myth, reminding us that history is not only what is written in books, but also what continues to vibrate in the silence of the rock.
