Journalist Cătălina Mioara Georgescu: IMPERIAL MACCAGNO: THE FIEF OF THE ABYSS AND THE EMERALD-STYLE AWAKENING OF LAKE MAGGIORE

Suspended between the rocky walls and the deep blue of Lake Maggiore, there is a place where time is not a clock, but a silent wave that caresses the shore. The village of Maccagno Imperiale is located in Lombardy, on the shores of Lake Maggiore. It is a hamlet of the municipality of Maccagno, along with Pino and Veddasca, offering 12 km of coastline and a remarkable variety of beaches, from private beaches to sheltered coves nestled between the rocks. With over two thousand inhabitants, it was originally divided into Borgo Superiore and Borgo Inferiore by the Giona stream. Maccagno Imperiale is not just a village, but also a fragment of history that has survived the centuries, maintaining an aura of wild nobility that explodes in all its beauty right now, in the heart of spring.

Its history dates back to 962 AD, when Emperor Otto I of Saxony, grateful for the hospitality received by the inhabitants during a storm, granted the village the title of „Imperial Fief”. For centuries, Maccagno enjoyed extraordinary autonomy, the right to mint coins (in its old mint), tax exemptions and its own courts. Today, this „imperial” pride can be felt in the narrow streets of the Lower Village, where the houses seem to lean on each other to avoid slipping into the lake. Visiting this charming place in spring means witnessing a miracle of colors: while the peaks of the Swiss Alps still retain the last layer of snow, the village is shaded by „camellias” and „azaleas”, and the historic gardens explode in splashes of fuchsia, white and red. The morning „Tramontana” wind clears the sky, transforming the water into a sheet of crystal that reflects the tender green of the forests. The scent of jasmine begins to awaken among the dry stone walls of the mule paths.

The most characteristic area of all is Contrada Maggiore, located in the Borgo Inferiore, where the houses seem almost magically packed together, separated only by narrow streets. Walking here is like stepping into a late 19th-century painting. Famous for its historic center, the Imperial Tower stands as a silent guardian, and the Sanctuary of Madonna della Punta overlooking the lake, the village offers a medieval atmosphere and a charming annual historical reenactment, often celebrated with events organized by the Pro Loco.

Walking through the village’s cobbled streets, we find the Parisi-Valle Civic Museum, a suspension bridge over the Giona stream. This avant-garde architectural structure houses collections of modern and contemporary art, creating a fascinating contrast between the village’s medieval history and the creative genius of the present.

For those looking for relaxation, Giona Park offers one of the largest and most beautiful beaches on the lake. At this time of year, it is the ideal place for a picnic surrounded by weeping willows in full leaf. But what makes this place unique is its duality. Behind the village, the walls of the Cinzanino Climbing Hall rise, where climbers defy gravity with the lake at their feet. For those who prefer walking, spring is the perfect season to climb towards the Verddasca Valley or reach Lake Elio, following trails that smell of damp earth and rebirth.

In Maccagno Imperiale, the lake does not end where it reaches the shore, but continues inside the houses, in the dialect of the people and in the silence of its imperial alleys. In spring, this magical place is not just a destination, but a state of mind, the moment when the power of the stone meets the timidity of the first flower.

Maccagno Imperiale awaits you to remind you that nobility is not just a historical title, but the ability to remain beautiful despite the passage of centuries.
